The Right White for Your Wedding Dress
Posted: 01 August 2010

Not many brides consider the colour of their wedding dress – they just know they want to get married in white. But there are a few different shades of white and you have to consider your skin tone when choosing the right white for you.
Stark White
This is the brightest, crispest white, which looks great on dark skin, but makes a pale skin tone look even paler and washed out. So this is a big no-no if you’re fair skinned and haven’t seen the sun in a while.
Silk, Diamond, or Natural White
This is a shade off of stark white, but it looks pretty much the same in photos. As a general rule, most people look best in a soft, diamond-white gown, which isn't as chalky as start white. This shade works well on most skin tones.
Ivory
Also referred to as "eggshell" or "candlelight." Some ivory dresses have a yellow undertone, making them look almost creamy, and others are just a "quiet" white. If you have a light tan then an ivory dress will compliment your skin tone.
Champagne
This is white with a pink undertone that looks nearly white in photos.
If you’re not sure what colour will compliment your skin tone then consider the following:
Fair Skin
Yellow-ivories will compliment your skin tone the most. Stay away from stark white, cause it might leave you looking washed out.
Medium Skin with pink undertones
Choose creamier colours for your wedding dress, as this will make you “glow” and give off a warm feel.
Medium Skin with yellow undertones
Diamond white or champagne will be your best choice.
Dark Skin
You are very fortunate as most shades of white will complement your skin. If you have yellow or olive undertones, stay away from yellow-ivory dresses. Try stark white or rum pink.
