Fresh Flowers on Your Wedding Cake
Posted: 30 July 2010

Whether you are planning to use flowers that match your wedding bouquet or to decorate a cake for a friend, fresh flowers are often used to decorate wedding cakes. However, it is important to know which flowers are safe to avoid placing poisonous petals on the cake you and your guests will eat. Your florist should be able to tell you which flowers are potentially dangerous and which are safe for use.
Here is a guide of flowers that are perfectly safe to use:
Daisies
You are probably familiar with the typical white field daisy with a yellow centre. This is not the only kind of daisy. Gerbera daisies are brightly coloured flowers found in colours including pinks, yellows and oranges.
Freesia
This flower is an extremely fragrant flower, and typically blooms in purple, however yellow and orange blooms are also commonly found.
LavenderLavender is edible and can often be found in French cuisine. The shade of purple of the blooms is how the colour lavender came to be. The flowers grow on the long stems of the plant in clusters. The fragrance should be taken into consideration when choosing the flower.
RosesRoses are one of the more popular floral choices for a wedding. The rose comes in a number of colours and varieties. Typically the colours represent different feelings.
If you are concerned about the flowers being dirty, you need not be, as florists are careful to wash every bloom that is intended for your wedding cake very carefully. If you still feel uneasy, there are ways to use fresh flowers and not have them come in direct contact with your confection. Your florist can make small arrangements to place between the tiers for a wonderful effect, or he can place flowers around the base of (and not touching) the wedding cake, as well as putting matching arrangements on the cake table. Alternatively some florists even go as far as to wrap each stem carefully in clear plastic wrap.
